# Trend Qualification Framework

**Purpose:** A trend isn't real until it shows up across multiple dimensions. Design alone isn't enough.

---

## The Three Dimensions

### 1. Design Dimension
**What practitioners are doing**

| Source Type | Examples | Signal Strength |
|-------------|----------|-----------------|
| Leading agencies | Pentagram, Collins, Koto, Wolff Olins | Very High |
| Award winners | D&AD, Cannes, Brand Impact | Very High |
| Quality publications | It's Nice That, Brand New | High |
| Behance/Dribbble trending | Popular work | Low (lagging) |

**Questions to ask:**
- Are top agencies doing this work?
- Are award juries recognizing it?
- Is it in portfolios or just mood boards?

---

### 2. Business Dimension
**What brands are investing in**

| Source Type | Examples | Signal Strength |
|-------------|----------|-----------------|
| Major rebrands | Nike, Apple, Google shifts | Very High |
| VC-backed brands | What well-funded startups commission | High |
| Campaign investments | What brands pay media for | High |
| Small brand adoption | Indie brands following | Medium (lagging) |

**Questions to ask:**
- Are brands putting budget behind this?
- Are CMOs commissioning this work?
- Is it premium-priced or commodity?

**Business signals to track:**
- Rebrand announcements (Brand New)
- Agency wins (AdAge, Campaign)
- Funding rounds (what aesthetic do funded brands use?)
- Premium brand moves (luxury adopting = validation)

---

### 3. Cultural Dimension
**What society is feeling**

| Source Type | Examples | Signal Strength |
|-------------|----------|-----------------|
| Fine art world | Gallery shows, auction trends | High (leading) |
| Music/album art | What artists are doing | High |
| Fashion | Runway, streetwear shifts | High |
| Film/TV aesthetic | Production design trends | Medium |
| Social movements | What activists visualize | Medium |
| TikTok/social | Mass adoption | Low (very lagging) |

**Questions to ask:**
- Are artists exploring this outside commercial work?
- Does fashion/music reflect this mood?
- Is there a cultural moment driving this?

**Cultural signals to track:**
- Art Basel, Frieze coverage
- Album art for major releases
- Fashion week reports
- Documentary/film aesthetic shifts
- Protest/movement visual language

---

## Qualification Matrix

| Design | Business | Cultural | Confidence | Interpretation |
|--------|----------|----------|------------|----------------|
| ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | **Very High** | Full alignment — ride this wave |
| ✅ | ✅ | ❌ | **High** | Proven commercial — safe bet |
| ✅ | ❌ | ✅ | **Medium** | Emerging — watch for business uptake |
| ❌ | ✅ | ✅ | **High** | Culture driving business — design will follow |
| ✅ | ❌ | ❌ | **Low** | Design bubble — may not translate |
| ❌ | ❌ | ✅ | **Low** | Cultural signal — too early for design |
| ❌ | ✅ | ❌ | **Low** | Business experiment — needs validation |

## Application: Qualifying a Signal

### Example: "Tactile Craft / Anti-AI Aesthetic"

**Design Dimension:**
- [ ] Top agencies doing tactile work? (Need: Pentagram, Collins examples)
- [ ] D&AD/Cannes winners showing handmade? (Need: 2024-2025 winner review)
- [ ] It's Nice That featuring this? (Need: search their coverage)

**Business Dimension:**
- [ ] Brands commissioning handmade over AI? (Need: rebrand examples)
- [ ] Premium pricing for craft? (Need: agency pricing signals)
- [ ] Funded startups using this aesthetic? (Need: recent brand launches)

**Cultural Dimension:**
- [ ] Artists rejecting AI publicly? (Need: art world coverage)
- [ ] Music/album art going analog? (Need: recent releases)
- [ ] Fashion doing tactile/craft? (Need: runway reports)

**Current Status:** Design dimension has weak signal (vendor reports only). Business and Cultural dimensions not yet validated. **Confidence: Low**

## Adding to Julia's Scan

When Julia finds a design signal:

1. **Log the design evidence**
2. **Scout business dimension:**
   - Search "[trend] brand rebrand"
   - Check Brand New for recent examples
   - Look for funded startups using aesthetic
3. **Scout cultural dimension:**
   - Search "[trend] art" / "[trend] fashion" / "[trend] music"
   - Check if artists are exploring this
   - Look for cultural moment connection
4. **Score using matrix**
5. **Update confidence level**

---

## Skill Integration

This framework should be checked:
- Before promoting any signal to "High" confidence
- In Julia's weekly analysis
- Before using trend in client conversations

**Rule:** Don't call it a trend until 2+ dimensions validate.
