# Institutional Design Trends

## The Pattern
Government and regulatory bodies are elevating design standards. What was once acceptable ("government website ugly") is now being actively reformed through policy.

## Examples

### Federal Design Mandate (US, August 2025)
- Executive order mandated design excellence across federal agencies
- National Design Studio (ndstudio.gov) now leads government UX
- New sites: TrumpRx, RealFood.gov, AmericaByDesign.gov
- These look like premium consumer/tech products, not legacy government

### NHS Design System (UK)
- Unified design language across National Health Service
- Set standard for healthcare institutional design

### EU Digital Identity
- Consistent design across member state implementations
- "Trustworthy" aesthetic without looking dated

## Strategic Implication

**The bar has moved.** Clients can no longer excuse poor design with "we're not a consumer brand" or "we're institutional." When the federal government looks like Stripe, your B2B SaaS has no excuse.

**Proof point for design investment:** When clients resist design spend, point to federal mandate. Design is now policy.

## Application

Use this pattern when:
- Client is in healthcare, government, or regulated industry
- Client uses "we're B2B" as excuse for bad design
- Positioning as "institutional authority" — must now mean beautiful too
- Pitching brand refresh to legacy organizations
