# Source Authority List

**Purpose:** Vetted sources for trend intelligence. Not all sources are equal.

---

## Tier 1: Design Agencies (Primary Authority)

These are practitioners. When they say something, it's because they're doing it.

### Global Leaders
| Agency | Specialty | Why Trust Them |
|--------|-----------|----------------|
| Pentagram | Identity, all disciplines | Partners are industry definers |
| Collins | Brand strategy + identity | Spotify, Twitch, Dropbox |
| Wolff Olins | Brand transformation | (RED), Uber, Google |
| Landor | Corporate identity | Legacy + scale |
| Mother Design | Brand + product | Method, Warby Parker |

### Strategic Boutiques
| Agency | Specialty | Why Trust Them |
|--------|-----------|----------------|
| Red Antler | DTC brand building | Casper, Allbirds, Brandless |
| Koto | Tech + startup identity | Framer, Notion, Monzo |
| Studio Dumbar | Dutch design, systematic | Government, cultural |
| Mucho | Spanish design, editorial | Bold typography |
| Ragged Edge | UK brand, bold identity | High contrast, confident |

### Illustration/Character
| Agency | Specialty | Why Trust Them |
|--------|-----------|----------------|
| Gander | Food + CPG packaging | Visual distinction |
| Universal Favourite | Character + craft | Illustration systems |
| Foreign Policy | Singapore, illustration | Character-driven brands |

## Tier 1: Awards (Pattern Validation)

Award winners show what juries (senior practitioners) consider excellent.

| Award | Focus | Weight |
|-------|-------|--------|
| D&AD | Craft excellence | Pencil = real signal |
| Cannes Lions | Effectiveness + craft | Grand Prix = industry direction |
| Brand Impact Awards | Brand transformation | Business outcomes |
| TDC (Type Directors Club) | Typography | Type trends |
| One Show | Advertising + design | US-focused |
| European Design Awards | European work | Regional signal |

**How to use:** Track winners over 2-3 years. Pattern = trend.

---

## Tier 2: Design Publications (Curated Signal)

Editorial filter adds credibility, but they're observers, not practitioners.

### High Authority
| Publication | Focus | Trust Level |
|-------------|-------|-------------|
| It's Nice That | Curated creative work | High - editorial standards |
| Eye Magazine | Design history + criticism | High - academic rigor |
| Creative Review | UK advertising + design | Medium-high |
| Brand New | Identity rebrand coverage | High - consistent lens |

### Medium Authority
| Publication | Focus | Trust Level |
|-------------|-------|-------------|
| Dezeen | Architecture + product | Medium - broad scope |
| Eye on Design (AIGA) | Design thinking | Medium - US-focused |
| Design Week | UK design industry | Medium |
| Communication Arts | Annuals, showcases | Medium |

### Use With Caution
| Publication | Issue |
|-------------|-------|
| Behance | No editorial filter - user submitted |
| Dribbble | Style over substance |
| Pinterest | Algorithm-driven, not curated |

### Followers, Not Setters (Good for Inspiration, Not Trends)
| Source | What They Show | Use For |
|--------|----------------|---------|
| VistaPrint/99designs | Good design examples | **Inspiration Library** — the work is often good |
| Behance popular | Mainstream aesthetic | **Taste Board** — what's already working |
| Canva trends | Mass-market design | Reference only |

**Key insight:** These sources are **lagging indicators**. By the time they're reporting something, it's already mainstream. Good for inspiration, not for trend prediction.

**Don't use for:** Trend Radar, strategic intelligence, "what's emerging"
**Do use for:** Taste Board, visual references, "what's proven to work"

---

## Tier 3: Business/Strategy (Macro Context)

For economic/cultural signals, not design trends.

| Source | Use For |
|--------|---------|
| McKinsey Design | Design's business impact |
| HBR | Management trends |
| AdAge | Agency/brand moves |
| Fast Company | Innovation narratives |

---

## Tier 4: Social Signals (Emerging, Unvalidated)

| Platform | How to Use |
|----------|------------|
| Design Twitter/X | Early signal, needs validation |
| LinkedIn | Agency announcements, less signal |
| Threads | Emerging, watch |

---

## Validation Protocol

When a source makes a strategic claim:

1. **Who's saying it?**
   - Practitioner (Tier 1) → Higher weight
   - Publication (Tier 2) → Medium weight
   - Vendor/Platform (Tier 3) → Low weight, verify

2. **Can we corroborate?**
   - Find 2+ independent sources
   - Independent = not citing each other
   - Award data = strong corroboration

3. **Is there practice evidence?**
   - Are agencies actually doing this?
   - Are brands commissioning this?
   - Are winners showing this?

4. **Time test**
   - Seen for 6+ months → Trend
   - Seen once → Signal (needs watching)

---

## Anti-Patterns (Don't Count These)

❌ Multiple quotes from same article = 1 source
❌ Publication citing another publication = 1 source
❌ Vendor trend report = Suspect (commercial agenda)
❌ "Predictions" without examples = Opinion
❌ Behance popularity = Audience, not authority
