## §02 Positioning

**Core positioning:** "Build by Design" — design is not a department or skill but the central process through which all great products and ideas are built. Figma positions itself as the operating system for collaborative creation across the entire product and marketing lifecycle.

**Mission evolution:** Originally the "first real-time collaborative design tool" (2016–2022), Figma has expanded its positioning to address a much wider audience. In 2024, they acknowledged only ~1/3 of users identify primarily as "designers." The brand now explicitly targets developers, product managers, marketers, and "everyone from the intern to the C-suite."

**2024 Brand Beliefs (from rebrand):**
1. *Design is everyone's business* — flexible, inclusive, not specialist-gated
2. *Craft as a differentiator* — quality and attention to detail matter
3. *The idea is just the beginning* — emphasizing iteration, not inspiration
4. *Build by design* — design as verb, not noun

**Strategic pivots 2023–2025:**
- Adobe acquisition blocked by regulators (Dec 2023, $20B deal scrapped)
- Reset valuation to $10B post-Adobe, then Series F ($416M) at $12.5B
- IPO July 2025 — closing day 1 at $115.50, implying ~$68B market cap
- Expanded product suite to compete with Canva, Webflow, Google Slides, Framer
- "Figma Make" AI-native platform positions Figma as a vibe-coding tool for design

---

## §04 Color Palette

**2024 Rebrand Philosophy:** Figma deliberately rejected "owning" a single color. The refreshed palette is intentionally expansive — bold primaries, bright neons, and muted earthy tones coexist. The concept was to reflect the diversity of users and the range of work happening in the platform.

**Logo / Wordmark Colors (original 4-piece vector logo):**
- Figma Purple: `#A259FF`
- Figma Blue: `#1ABCFE`
- Figma Green: `#0ACF83`
- Figma Red/Orange: `#F24E1E`
- Wordmark: `#000000` on light / `#FFFFFF` on dark

**Website CSS extraction (March 2026):**
- `#4D49FC` — Figma brand blue/violet (CTA buttons)
- `#00B6FF` — Cyan/electric blue (accent)
- `#24CB71` — Green (success/CTA states)
- `#874FFF` — Purple variant
- `#FF7237` — Orange-red (energy/action)
- `#E4FF97` — Neon lime (feature highlights)
- `#C7F8FB` — Pale cyan (background tints)
- `#FFB3B3` — Soft pink/salmon
- `#000000` / `#FFFFFF` — Core black/white canvas

**Vision Analysis from captures:**
- Homepage leans heavily on **white + black with mint/lime green** section accents (`#E8FFE0`)
- CTA buttons: `#7B61FF` (soft violet-purple)
- Dark backgrounds (`#1E1E1E` near-black) used for footer and editorial sections
- **Color strategy:** The "Figma canvas gray" (`#E8E8E8`) is universally understood by the designer community as "I'm showing you a Figma file" — a passive brand color activated by UGC

---

## §05 Typography

**Primary typeface:** Figma Sans (2024)
- Commissioned from **Grilli Type** (Swiss-American foundry)
- Variable font: 5 families, 6 weights, 60 static fonts
- Features: monospace variable axis (adjustable from full mono → semi-mono), optical sizes, slant axis — all in a single variable font file
- Used for wordmark (automatically adjusts to context), editorial site, product UI
- Design intention: "easy to use and apply, while still having that expressive edge"
- Replaced: Dinamo Whyte (used 2019–2024)

**Secondary typeface on website:**
- Clean geometric sans-serif (Inter-like) — system-level readability
- Headings: Bold/Black weight at large scale (~48px+), tight tracking
- Body: Regular/Medium, generous line-height
- No all-caps, no decorative treatments — maximally legible

**Voice/tone through type:**
- Figma Sans has a "buttoned up" wordmark that doesn't compete with the visual world around it
- Headers are direct and statement-like ("Prompt, code, and design from first idea to final product")
- Monospace flip of Figma Sans activates for code/developer contexts — identity shapeshifts per audience

---

## §06 Layout & UX

**Website homepage architecture (2025 version):**
- **Hero:** Single centered prompt-bar input (AI-native) with green CTA — stark, minimal, confident
- **Trust strip:** Horizontal logo bar of enterprise customers immediately below hero (Airbnb, GitHub, Netflix, etc.)
- **Feature sections:** 2-column alternating (text left / visual right, then text right / visual left)
- **Background palette system:** White → Mint/lime tints → Dark sections — creates visual rhythm without aggressive design
- **Community showcase:** 4-column grid of user-created projects (emphasizes platform scale)
- **Testimonials:** Large quote mark, left-aligned text, avatar + attribution right
- **Footer:** Dense multi-column link grid on near-black background

**Layout characteristics:**
- **Generous whitespace** — enterprise-quality breathing room, never cluttered
- **Product-forward:** Features show real Figma canvases, not illustrations or stock photography
- **Horizontal dividers** in feature lists (accordion-style expand/collapse) — functional elegance
- **Motion:** Page interactions described as motion-driven (Relay partnership for Config)

**Canvas/product UI patterns:**
- Figma canvas: `#E8E8E8` gray background (universally recognizable)
- Named cursors in multiplayer: Brand's most iconic product UI element
- Layer panel, properties panel, toolbar — dark-mode by default

---

## §07 Assessment

**Strengths:**
1. **Market dominance** — 77% share among professional designers; Adobe XD in decline
2. **Community moat** — plugin ecosystem, community files, Config conference culture
3. **Brand authenticity** — "made by designers, for designers" credibility that Canva and Adobe lack
4. **Multiplayer as brand** — collaboration is not a feature but Figma's entire identity
5. **AI-native positioning** — Figma Make/Sites puts them ahead of traditional design tools in the AI wave
6. **IPO momentum** — public company status brings enterprise sales capability, brand legitimacy
7. **Custom typeface** — Figma Sans signals maturity and commitment to brand craft

**Weaknesses:**
1. **Pricing pressure** — free tier forces paid conversion challenges; Canva is simpler for non-designers
2. **Scope creep risk** — expanding into Buzz/Sites/Slides risks brand dilution ("what IS Figma now?")
3. **Developer/designer tension** — as they court developers and marketers, core designer audience may feel displaced
4. **Adobe Creative Cloud competition** — Adobe bundles tools free for CC subscribers, creating value comparison issue
5. **Post-IPO pressure** — quarterly earnings now drive roadmap, potentially sacrificing long-term brand coherence
6. **Social media** — Instagram at 896K followers is modest for a $1B+ revenue company; far behind consumer-facing brands

---

## §08 Strategic Verdict

**Borrow:** The "platform as community" model — Config conference as music festival, award ecosystem for plugin creators, community files as discovery engine. Figma makes the tool feel like a movement.

**Watch:** The "everyone is a designer" positioning expansion into Buzz/Sites. If Figma can re-define design as the process through which all work happens (not just UI), they've changed their TAM from $5B to $50B.

**Reject:** Over-reliance on visual variety as brand system. The expanded palette is smart for Figma (they can flex it contextually) but hard to execute without their level of brand infrastructure.

**Threat level for eToro:** LOW-MEDIUM. Figma competes in design tooling; eToro is a fintech trading platform. However, Figma competes for *developer/product team mindshare* at the companies whose apps compete with eToro. When Figma becomes the design OS for the fintech world, their aesthetic standards and collaborative templates will shape what eToro's competitors build.

---

## §09 Brand Personality

**Archetype:** Creator / Sage (hybrid)
- Primary: **Creator** — tools, building, making, craft, expression
- Secondary: **Sage** — knowledge, community, education, Config as knowledge festival

**Brand voice:**
- Direct, no-nonsense, confident without arrogance
- Speaks to teams, not individuals ("bring everyone to the table")
- Self-aware about the designer community — uses insider language fluently
- Playful in social media (punchy captions, memes, product jokes)
- Formal when needed (investor relations, enterprise sales)

**Visual personality from social analysis:**
- Tonal range: dark-mode professional (TikTok) ↔ bright yellow celebration (Config awards) ↔ pixel art whimsy (plugin showcases)
- No single aesthetic "mode" — adapts to context while maintaining recognizable Figma-ness
- Community UGC tone: ironic, experimental, technically precise with playful edge
- Cursor animations as visual motif across all branded content

**Audience signal:**
- Core: UI/UX designers, product designers, 25–35, global
- Expanding: Frontend developers, product managers, marketing designers
- Aspirational: Executives who want to understand what their design teams do
- Community identity: "I use Figma" as a professional signal — cultural marker

## §10 vs eToro

| Dimension | Figma | eToro |
|-----------|-------|-------|
| **Category** | Design/product platform | Social investment platform |
| **Core user** | Designer/developer | Retail investor |
| **Brand personality** | Creator/craftsperson | Social/community investor |
| **Community mechanics** | Config, plugins, community files | CopyTrader, Popular Investors |
| **Collaboration claim** | Real-time multiplayer design | Social trading, copy investing |
| **AI narrative** | Figma Make — design from prompts | AI trading tools, smart portfolios |
| **Color system** | Multi-color, context-adaptive | Blue/green fintech, trust-driven |
| **Typography** | Figma Sans — custom variable | Likely standard sans-serif |
| **Campaign heritage** | Collins "Nothing Great is Made Alone" | — |
| **Brand maturity** | Sophisticated, award-winning | Functional, growth-focused |

**Key parallel:** Both Figma and eToro are fundamentally **collaboration/community platforms** wrapped in tool utility. Figma's insight — that "collaboration is the product" — is relevant for eToro's CopyTrader positioning. Figma makes visible (through named cursors) the act of collaborating; eToro could make visible the act of following/being followed in trading.

**Design language gap:** Figma's visual identity is dramatically more developed and award-winning than typical fintech. eToro could draw inspiration from Figma's approach of building community events (Config → eToro trading competitions), creating brand-owned cultural moments rather than just transactional marketing.
