# §6 — Messaging Architecture

**Purpose:** Define how the brand communicates across use cases and personas.

---

## Key Question 1: What are our go-to phrases or metaphors?

### Core Metaphor: The Intelligent Community

The central metaphor is **investing as collective intelligence** — not a casino, not a solo mission, not a game. A community of minds making each other smarter.

### Go-To Phrases

**Primary Tagline:**
> The smartest way to invest.

**Supporting Phrases (ranked by use frequency):**

| Phrase | Use Case |
|--------|----------|
| "40 million investors. One intelligent community." | Brand hero, above-the-fold, first impression |
| "Social insight meets market intelligence." | Platform positioning, B2B, press |
| "Where investors think together." | Community-forward messaging, social campaigns |
| "We make you a smarter investor." | Product marketing, onboarding, education |
| "Copy top investors automatically." | CopyTrader-specific, performance marketing |
| "Your edge is 40 million investors." | Competitive differentiation, acquisition |
| "Intelligence, connected." | Abstract/premium contexts, events, sponsorships |
| "The pioneers of social investing, now publicly listed." | Trust/credibility, investor relations |
| "Invest intelligently." | CTA-adjacent, short-form |

### Metaphors to Use

| Metaphor | Why It Works |
|----------|-------------|
| **"The crowd as intelligence"** | Reframes 40M users from vanity metric to functional edge. "Your edge isn't an algorithm — it's 40 million investors." |
| **"Investing in the open"** | Transparency as brand value. Counter-positions against opaque hedge funds, insider trading, black-box AI. |
| **"The financial brain"** | eToro as a collective brain — each investor a neuron, each trade a signal, the platform the neural network. |
| **"Progressive depth"** | Like an ocean: calm surface, infinite depth underneath. Simple for beginners, deep for experts. Same water. |

### Metaphors to Avoid

| Metaphor | Why We Reject It |
|----------|------------------|
| **Gambling/casino** | "Place your bet," "jackpot," "strike it rich" — absolutely never. Regulated industry, reputational risk, wrong archetype. |
| **War/combat** | "Crush the market," "battle-tested," "weapon in your arsenal" — Hero archetype language. We're the Sage. |
| **Race/speed** | "Don't miss out," "race to the top," "get there first" — creates false urgency. FOMO is a CySEC-prohibited practice. |
| **Hype/rocket** | 🚀, "to the moon," "blast off" — crypto-bro language. The exact association we're shedding. |

---

## Key Question 2: How do we vary tone by audience or platform?

### Voice Matrix: Channel × Tone

| Channel | Tone | Register | Example |
|---------|------|----------|---------|
| **Homepage hero** | Confident, declarative | Premium | "The smartest way to invest." |
| **App onboarding** | Warm, guiding | Conversational | "Let's set up your portfolio. It takes about 3 minutes." |
| **Social feed (X/Instagram)** | Sharp, current, human | Casual-confident | "NVIDIA earnings just dropped. Here's what our top investors are doing →" |
| **LinkedIn** | Authoritative, data-rich | Professional | "40M investors. $17.5B AUM. Nasdaq-listed. eToro is where social insight meets market intelligence." |
| **Email — acquisition** | Clear, benefit-led | Direct | "Start investing with as little as $50. Copy top investors automatically." |
| **Email — retention** | Personal, intelligent | Warm | "Your portfolio gained 3.2% this month. Here's what the community is watching next." |
| **Push notification** | Useful, never urgent | Concise | "Tesla up 5% pre-market. 3 Popular Investors just opened positions." |
| **YouTube pre-roll** | Hook + intelligence | Energetic but grounded | "What do 40 million investors know that you don't? [5s hook] eToro — the smartest way to invest." |
| **TikTok** | Native, authentic, educational | Platform-native | Quick-take market insight by a real Popular Investor. No suits. No jargon. Real portfolio. |
| **Sponsorship (sports)** | Minimal, iconic | Premium signage | "eToro" wordmark only. No tagline on stadium boards. Let the name work. |
| **Press release** | Formal, factual | Corporate | "eToro, the global multi-asset investment platform (Nasdaq: ETOR), today announced..." |
| **eToro Academy** | Patient, educational, empowering | Teacher-student | "Let's break down what an ETF actually is — and why 70% of our investors hold at least one." |
| **Investor relations** | Precise, metrics-driven | Institutional | "Q4 2024 revenue of $931M reflects continued growth in funded accounts and ARPU." |
| **Customer support** | Empathetic, clear, solution-first | Helpful | "I understand this is frustrating. Here's exactly what's happening and what we'll do next." |

### Voice by Audience

| Audience | Tone Emphasis | We Sound Like | We Never Sound Like |
|---------|--------------|---------------|-------------------|
| **Graduated Beginner** | Warm + intelligent. Respect their growth. | A smart friend who's two years ahead of you in investing | A teacher talking down, or a salesperson pushing |
| **Sophisticated Active** | Confident + precise. Peer-to-peer. | A Bloomberg terminal with a personality | A retail app trying to seem smart |
| **Global Citizen** | Worldly + seamless. Assume sophistication. | An international business lounge | A tourist brochure |

## Key Question 3: What's our one message that must land every time?

### The Non-Negotiable Message

> **eToro makes you a smarter investor by connecting you with 40 million others.**

Every touchpoint — ad, email, notification, sponsorship, investor deck — must reinforce at least one half of this:
1. **"Makes you smarter"** — the intelligence promise
2. **"By connecting you with 40 million others"** — the community mechanism

If a piece of communication doesn't reinforce at least one, it's off-brand.

### How This Manifests

| Touchpoint | Intelligence Element | Community Element |
|-----------|---------------------|-------------------|
| CopyTrader ad | "Top investors' strategies, in your portfolio" | "Follow the smartest investors in 75+ countries" |
| Smart Portfolios | "AI-curated portfolios for every risk level" | "Built from insights across 40M investors" |
| Acquisition email | "Start investing with intelligence, not guesswork" | "Join the world's largest investing community" |
| App Store listing | "The smartest way to invest" | "40M+ investors. Social insight. Market intelligence." |
| Sponsorship | "eToro" (the name carries the intelligence promise after brand builds) | (Implicit — brand recognition does the work) |

---

## 🔴 FLAGS FOR LAYER 2 (Research) AND LAYER 3 (Original Thinking)

**For Julia / Research:**
- Pull real messaging examples from Robinhood, Revolut, Coinbase, Schwab homepages and app stores RIGHT NOW. How does our proposed language compare?
- What's the actual eToro app store listing copy today? Does it align with or contradict the proposed messaging?
- Reddit/Trustpilot: what language do real eToro users use to describe the platform? Do they say "social trading" or something else?

**For Ogilvy (Language):**
- The voice matrix is structural. Now it needs *voice*. Can you write 3–5 example social media posts, 2 email subject lines, and 1 push notification that demonstrate the tone in practice?
- Regional adaptations are placeholder — each one needs a native-fluent copywriter to land culturally. Flag which ones feel forced.
- "The smartest way to invest" — is "smartest" the right word? Alternatives: wisest, sharpest, most intelligent? Each carries different connotations.

**For Anton (Stress Test):**
- The "one message that must land" — is it too rational? Does it have emotional pull? "Makes you smarter by connecting you with 40 million" is a proposition, not a feeling.
- The metaphor "crowd as intelligence" — does this break down when the crowd is wrong? (GameStop, LUNA, meme stocks.) How do we defend "social intelligence" when social can mean "mob"?
- Tier 1 tagline "The smartest way to invest" — has this been legally cleared? Can a regulated financial platform claim to be "the smartest"? Advertising standards risk.
