## SITUATION BRIEF

Porsche Taycan US sales: **7,570 (2023) → 4,747 (2024) → 4,142 (2025)**. Three consecutive years of decline. The 2025 model year brought meaningful product improvements — Car and Driver named it EV of the Year — and the Taycan gained Supercharger access via NACS adapter (September 2025). The product is objectively better. Sales are still falling.

This is a narrative problem. Specifically: a US narrative problem. "Soul, Electrified" has been the tagline since 2018. There is no coherent, US-specific campaign that addresses the rational objections American EV buyers hold.

The electric Macan, meanwhile, sold aggressively — 44.6% of US Macan sales in Q1 2025 were electric. The interest in Porsche EVs is real. The story for the Taycan isn't landing.

---

## SECTION 1: PORSCHE'S CURRENT US TAYCAN NARRATIVE

### "Soul, Electrified" — Status: Ambient But Not Active
The tagline dates to 2018, when Porsche revealed the Taycan's name (meaning "Soul of a Spirited Young Horse"). It anchored the 2020 Super Bowl spot "The Heist" (produced by Cramer-Krasselt), which became one of the most-watched Super Bowl auto ads that year. In 2023, it evolved into "Soul Electrified: The Current Within" — a collaboration with digital artists published on hypebeast.com that extended the tagline into a cultural art moment. That campaign was the last meaningful US-facing activation tied to the phrase.

**In 2024–2025, there is no replacement campaign.** The Porsche US newsroom features performance content (range tests, Nürburgring records) and product updates. The iSpot.tv database shows a 2024 TV spot titled "What the 911 Is to Sports Cars" — a line that leans into legacy but doesn't answer buyer objections. A 2023 spot "Pedal on the Right" ran on US television (ispot.tv/ad/5FHu), emphasizing two-pedal driving philosophy — a Porsche differentiator vs. regen-heavy EVs, but still an insider message.

**What exists right now:**
- Product-focused digital content on porsche.com/stories: range tests, charging speed, Turbo GT performance
- Nürburgring record press releases (Jan 2024: 7:07.55 lap, 26-second improvement — widely covered)
- Track record press content at Laguna Seca, Shanghai, Interlagos, Road Atlanta, Yas Marina (2024–2025)
- "Porsche NOW" pop-up retail activations in US cities — experiential, not narrative
- Porsche Experience Centers (Atlanta, LA) featured in owned content

**The tone:** Technical authority. Performance-forward. Aspirational in a European sense. The imagined buyer reads like a cosmopolitan 911 owner being reassured that the electric car is still a "real Porsche." The American buyer who is genuinely considering a Taycan as their next luxury EV — and weighing it against a Tesla Model S or BMW i5 — is not being addressed.

## SECTION 2: WHO IS ACTUALLY ANSWERING TAYCAN BUYER QUESTIONS

### What American Consumers Are Actually Asking
The r/Taycan subreddit (active, thousands of threads) is the most authentic signal. The dominant question clusters in 2024–2025:

1. **"Is the charging really that bad?"** — Multiple threads about charging failures at 40–60% battery, onboard charger failures requiring weeks at the dealer, Electrify America reliability issues. (Sources: r/Taycan threads 1qxs0vk, 1o99108, 1qfbrae, 1m98osg)
2. **"What happens after the OTA update?"** — ARB6 software update broke charging for multiple owners. General frustration that dealerships deprioritize software jobs as "less profitable." (Rennlist: 1483533 — OTA update + charging breakdown)
3. **"Is the software going to get better?"** — r/Taycan thread 1mmuf5k titled "Software is the worst I ever experienced on a car" went viral within the community. Navigation buggy, infotainment lags, key detection failures. (Source: reddit.com/r/Taycan/1mmuf5k)
4. **"Will this hold its value?"** — YouTube video "Porsche's EV Gamble: The Taycan Depreciation Crisis" from Cars with Miles (August 2024) hit **552,000 views** — by far the most-watched Taycan content from a non-professional outlet. (Source: YouTube search results)
5. **"How does it road trip vs. a Tesla?"** — Persistent comparative questions. Buyers know Tesla's Supercharger network is better and want to know if the speed differential matters.
6. **"What do PCA members actually think of it?"** — New Taycan owners worried about being second-class in a club built around ICE Porsches. PCA acknowledged being "late" to EV integration and only recently appointed a national EV representative. (Source: pca.org, r/Taycan/1eg0rb4)

### Who Is Answering — And How Well

**Out of Spec Reviews (YouTube):** The gold standard for technical EV buyers. Their Taycan coverage includes a 70-mph highway range test (330+ miles surpassing EPA), and a 2024 charging test showing the updated Taycan hitting 310 kW peak with an average of 212 kW from 10–90% (80% in 16:20). Kyle's narration frames these numbers as the Taycan's "secret weapon." Audience: obsessive EV researchers. Views: 45–61K per Taycan-specific video. **This is the best rational case being made for the car — and it's coming from a third-party YouTube channel, not Porsche.**

**Car and Driver:** Named the 2025 Taycan EV of the Year (July 2025, youtube.com/watch?v=o_xs27rRhME). Praised driving dynamics, 318-mile EPA range, active ride option. Strong editorial credibility. Audience skews older enthusiast buyers. Reaches the consideration stage but not the pre-consideration discovery stage.

**Doug DeMuro:** 2019 Taycan review — 6.9 million views. Still ranking. Quirks/features format doesn't address current 2025 model updates. No recent Taycan content visible.

**Edmunds:** Range test (364 miles real-world for base Taycan with Performance Battery Plus at mixed speed) published on edmunds.com. Widely cited. Functional but not narrative.

**Autogefühl (YouTube):** European-based but watches globally. "Why this is the best Porsche Taycan!" (2024 facelift) — comprehensive, skews German audience.

**Cars with Miles (YouTube):** "Porsche's EV Gamble: Taycan Depreciation Crisis" — 552K views. This video is doing more to shape American perception of the Taycan than any official Porsche content. It's not negative — it's rational — but it frames the car as a financial risk. **Porsche has no counter-narrative to this.**

**Singh Auto (YouTube):** "2025 Porsche Taycan Full Review | Is This the Best EV You Can Buy?" (April 2025) — includes quick Tesla comparison. Targets active buyers, dealership tie-in, US-focused framing.

### What Questions Are NOT Being Answered (The Content Gap)

- **What actual Taycan ownership looks like over 3 years** — battery degradation, software journey, charging reliability narrative. There are Reddit threads but no trusted, owned, long-form documentation.
- **Taycan vs. Tesla for a non-car person** — The NACS adapter story (Sept 2025 = access to 23,500+ Superchargers) is a **massive rational win** that has received almost no marketing amplification. It directly eliminates the network anxiety objection. The story hasn't been told to buyers.
- **Lifestyle integration for new-to-Porsche buyers** — 50%+ of Taycan buyers are new to the brand and under 45. No content exists that talks to *them* in their language.
- **The software improvement arc** — No owned narrative on what's being fixed and when. The fixes are happening (OTA updates, NACS integration, ARB software) but there's no transparent story being told.
- **Comparison content Porsche controls** — BMW and Mercedes are making direct comparison content. Porsche isn't.

---

## SECTION 3: WHAT PORSCHE'S AGENCIES ARE DOING

### Cramer-Krasselt (C-K) — US Lead Agency

C-K is Porsche's North American creative agency of record. Their documented work:
- **2020 Super Bowl "The Heist"** — Porsche's best-performing Taycan ad. A car chase involving the Taycan and the entire Porsche lineup. Big storytelling, cult following. Tied to "Soul, Electrified." (Source: c-k.com, shortyawards.com 13th annual shorty)
- **2021 "Going the Distance"** — 8-minute short film starring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter. Cinematic, lifestyle-forward, but showcased the car's real capabilities. (Source: c-k.com/news/ad-of-the-week-porsches-going-the-distance)
- **2021 "No Small Dreams"** — Animated campaign, heritage-focused. (c-k.com)

**What C-K has done for Taycan in 2024–2025: Not publicly documented.** No case studies, no press releases, no award entries visible. The 2024 "Keep Your Essence" campaign for the Macan EV was credited to **Grabarz & Partner** (a German agency), not C-K. The US Taycan narrative vacuum in 2024–2025 appears to be real.

### Other PCNA Agency Roster Activity
- **Grabarz & Partner:** Led the "Keep Your Essence" global campaign for the electric Macan (January 2024). This is meaningful — the Macan EV has outperformed the Taycan narratively AND commercially.
- **April Six Mobility:** Appointed by Porsche GB for Centre Marketing. UK-specific.
- **Dig Agency:** Named as Porsche Australia's creative agency starting November 2024.
- **The Romans:** PR agency for Porsche Middle East and Africa, November 2025.

**The pattern:** Regional agencies are winning work that C-K used to handle. The Taycan specifically may be in an agency gap — with no active campaign ownership.

### Creative Approach Assessment
The overall approach across Porsche's recent Taycan work: **aspirational + performance-technical.** Emotional narratives (The Heist, Going the Distance) peaked in 2020–2021. Current content is press release-grade: range numbers, charging specs, lap records. This is right for automotive journalists and performance enthusiasts. It is not working for the lifestyle-curious buyer in their late 30s who is deciding between a Taycan, BMW i5, and Model S.

### BMW vs. Mercedes vs. Porsche — Comparative Agency Approach

**BMW** won the 2025 Super Bowl with "Talkin' Like Walken" (Christopher Walken + Ashley Park + Usher) for the i5. A celebrity-anchored, humor-forward emotional spot that ran on the biggest stage in US advertising. BMW's BEV sales were up 34% in H1 2024. BMW iX ranked **highest in JD Power 2025 US EVX Ownership Study** (790/1000). Their strategy: make the car feel culturally present and emotionally safe, then let product satisfaction do the work.

**Mercedes** is sunsetting the "EQ" sub-brand entirely — integrating EVs as simply "Mercedes-Benz" (e.g., "G 580 with EQ Technology" not "EQG"). Their campaign for the electric G-Class stars Bradley Cooper. The strategic move: don't make the EV thing feel like a separate category. Just make it feel like the world's best Mercedes. The "Beyond Electric" Maybach EQS SUV campaign invited customers to go "beyond luxury." Tone: aspirational luxury, not green.

**Porsche** has no equivalent narrative moment in 2024–2025.

---

## SECTION 4: COMPETITOR EV NARRATIVE IN THE US

### Mercedes EQ: Rebranding Away From "EV"
Mercedes is **moving away from EQ as a sub-brand**. The strategy is clear: EV anxiety is real, but luxury buyers don't want to feel like they're buying an experiment. By folding EVs into core Mercedes-Benz identity ("G 580 with EQ Technology"), they signal: this is just a better Mercedes. The Bradley Cooper G-Class campaign (media.mbusa.com) is a cultural moment, not a product demo.

Key narrative themes: sustainable luxury, emotional connection, adventure capability. What they are NOT doing: explaining why EV is better. They're just behaving like it is.

**What Mercedes gets right that Porsche doesn't:** They're not defending the EV format. They're taking the brand's existing authority and letting it absorb the EV without friction.

**Where Mercedes struggles:** EQ models (EQS, EQB) had sluggish demand. They've been discounting heavily on 2025 models (ev.com: "Mercedes rolls out massive discounts on 2025 high-end EVs"). The rebranding pivot may be more about covering weakness than strategic confidence.

### BMW i-Series: Winning on Product + Cultural Placement
BMW's EV narrative is the most effective in the luxury segment right now. Their approach:
- **Super Bowl bet on i5** (2024 Super Bowl LVIII, "Talkin' Like Walken") — Celebrity + humor + the idea that the BMW i5 is so good it has "Christopher Walken" energy. Emotional, memorable, safe.
- **Global multichannel campaign** using Benson Boone's "Beautiful Things" (Sept 2024) — aspirational, heritage + future.
- **JD Power proof:** iX scored highest in 2025 US EVX Ownership Study (790/1000). i4 ranked high for comfort, interior quality. BMW's EVs are delivering on satisfaction.

**BMW's key insight:** They stopped trying to convince people EVs are good. They started showing people that their cars are the best — and they happen to be electric.

**The catch:** BMW i4 inventory situation in late 2025 showed nearly 90% of 2025 i4s unsold after EV incentive expiration — even strong narrative can't fully offset macro headwinds.

### Who Is Winning the US Luxury EV Narrative Battle?
**BMW is winning.** Evidence:
- JD Power 2025 EVX Study: BMW iX #1 overall
- J.D. Power 2024 APEAL Study: Porsche highest-ranked premium brand (891 pts) — but this is overall product quality, not narrative effectiveness
- BMW BEV sales +34% H1 2024 while Taycan -49%
- Non-Tesla EVs collectively beat Tesla in owner satisfaction (877 vs. 870) for first time in 2024 JD Power — BMW leading

### Non-Automotive EV Narrative Worth Stealing
The most interesting EV narrative outside automotive is the **vehicle-as-energy-infrastructure** story being built around V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) technology. It frames an EV not as a car you also charge but as a power asset you also drive. This is several years ahead of where Porsche buyers are, but it's a positioning vector that justifies premium price in a way "sports car heritage" doesn't for non-enthusiasts.

More immediately applicable: **Tesla's approach to over-the-air software updates as product news.** Tesla made OTA updates a reason to be excited about ownership. Porsche is currently suffering from OTA updates being associated with charging breakdowns. The framing gap is massive.

---

## SECTION 5: THE ACTUAL US TAYCAN BUYER

### Demographics
- **Average household income:** $500,000+ annually (source: portersfiveforce.com Porsche target market analysis)
- **Age:** Under 45 for 50%+ of Taycan buyers — younger than the Porsche brand median (avg ~50)
- **New to Porsche:** 50%+ are first-time Porsche owners
- **Gender:** 81.5% male, 18.5% female (female share increasing — partly attributed to Taycan appeal)
- **Geography:** Disproportionately concentrated in California, Texas, Florida, New York metro

### Why Taycan Buyers Choose It (Positive Motivators)
1. Porsche badge and driving dynamics — the "real sports car" feeling in an EV
2. 800V architecture = fastest charging in class (10–80% in 18 min at 320 kW charger)
3. Interior build quality and material options superior to Tesla and BMW peers
4. Driving engagement: two-pedal philosophy, track capability, precise steering
5. J.D. Power 2024 APEAL: Taycan best-in-class upper midsize premium EV for satisfaction, quality, performance, design

### Top Objections — Documented From Primary Sources

**1. Charging reliability (not just range)**
The biggest real-world complaint isn't "not enough range" — it's "charging stops working." Reddit r/Taycan shows a persistent pattern: onboard charger failures, charging halting at 40–60%, cars at dealers for weeks. Electrify America's network reliability compounds this. (Sources: r/Taycan threads 1nqi958, 1qxs0vk, 1o27w25, 1m98osg — all 2025 threads)

**2. Software quality**
r/Taycan thread "Software is the worst I ever experienced on a car" (1mmuf5k) — users pile on with navigation failures, infotainment freezing, key detection issues. ARB6 OTA update broke charging for multiple owners (Rennlist 1483533). Rennlist thread "Will these recalls ever end?" documents buyer fatigue with software-related recall cycles. (Source: rennlist.com/forums/taycan/1434463)

**3. Depreciation / resale value**
KBB: 2025 Taycan 5-year depreciation estimated at $63,900. The 552K-view "Taycan Depreciation Crisis" YouTube video from Cars with Miles (August 2024) has done more damage to Taycan's value perception than any product flaw. First-gen EVs from major brands are all depreciating fast — but the Taycan story is the one going viral.

**4. Price-value ratio**
KBB owner surveys: 85% of Taycan owners would recommend the car. Their weakest-rated attribute: **value**. Starting at $101,395 for 2025. Options add quickly. Tesla Model S offers 405-mile range for less money. Lucid Air offers 516-mile range. "Why does a $120K Porsche have worse range than a $75K Tesla?" is a real question on forums.

**5. Network/ecosystem vs. Tesla**
Tesla's Supercharger network (17,000 stations, 23,500+ points) is documented as vastly more reliable than Electrify America (Porsche's primary network). This is the #1 infrastructure objection. The NACS adapter story (September 2025 soft launch = Taycan can now use Superchargers) directly solves this problem but has received minimal amplification.

### What Would Make Taycan the Obvious Choice
Buyers who are won over consistently cite:
- Home charging + public charging speeds that make Taycan faster overall vs. longer-range competitors
- Active Ride Suspension (2025+) as a differentiated experience that has no peer
- Track capability and driving engagement that Tesla, BMW, Mercedes can't match at any price
- 800V architecture makes trip charging faster even with lower EPA range vs. competitors
- Car and Driver EV of the Year 2025 is the strongest editorial statement the car has had in years

The gap: these reasons exist. They're not being told.

### Survey Data and Analyst Commentary
- **J.D. Power 2024 APEAL:** Porsche highest premium brand overall (891 pts) — Taycan best in upper midsize premium EV category
- **KBB owner survey:** 85% would recommend; "value" is weakest attribute
- **Consumer Reports 2024:** Taycan rated #6 best EV, overall 76/100. Noted for driving performance, handling, ride comfort, craftsmanship.
- **Kelley Blue Book 5-year cost:** ~$127,000 total ownership including $63,900 depreciation
- **Plug In America 2024 EV Driver Survey:** 89% of EV owners say next car will be an EV — high loyalty base to cultivate
- **Porsche CEO quote (2024):** "The ramp-up of electric mobility is generally proceeding more slowly than planned." (newsroom.porsche.com)

## SECTION 6: WHAT'S ALREADY SOLVED — WHAT'S STILL OPEN

### Where the Narrative IS Working

**Motorsport / performance halo — WORKING.**
The Taycan Turbo GT's Nürburgring record (7:07.55, January 2024 — 26-second improvement, putting the Taycan "in the same league as electric hypercars") generated major automotive press coverage globally. Road and Track, Car and Driver, Motor1 all covered it extensively. Track records continued at Laguna Seca, Shanghai, Interlagos, Road Atlanta, Yas Marina throughout 2024–2025. This content performs well because it speaks directly to the performance-curious buyer and existing Porsche enthusiasts. It doesn't convert the undecided luxury EV buyer who doesn't care about lap times. (Sources: newsroom.porsche.com, roadandtrack.com, caranddriver.com)

**Technical review ecosystem — PARTIALLY WORKING.**
Out of Spec Reviews, Edmunds, Car and Driver, InsideEVs are doing legitimate technical work that makes the rational case for the Taycan. This content exists and performs. The problem: it's fragmented, third-party, and not amplified by Porsche into a coherent story. Buyers who find it are converted. Most buyers don't find it.

**The Macan EV — WORKING AS EV PROOF-OF-CONCEPT.**
The electric Macan's US success (44.6% of Macan sales in Q1 2025 were electric) proves the Porsche EV story can land when buyers feel like they're trading up, not compromising. The Macan buyer comes to Porsche for practicality and gets a revelation. The Taycan buyer comes having already committed to a sports car and gets existential doubt.

**Car and Driver EV of the Year 2025 — UNDERUTILIZED ASSET.**
This is the most credible third-party endorsement the Taycan has received. It should be the centerpiece of a campaign. It is not.

### Where the Narrative Is DEFINITIVELY NOT WORKING

**The American lifestyle buyer — NOT WORKING.**
The 50%+ of Taycan buyers who are new to Porsche and under 45 are not being spoken to in their language. They are not performance enthusiasts. They are status-conscious, tech-oriented, successful early adopters who want a premium EV that validates their identity. "Soul, Electrified" is about Porsche's soul. It doesn't speak to theirs.

**The charging story — NOT WORKING.**
Porsche has arguably the fastest charging architecture on the market (800V, 320 kW peak). The NACS adapter access to Superchargers (Sept 2025) eliminated the network objection. Neither story is being told. Instead, buyer-facing content is full of charging horror stories from owners whose onboard chargers failed — and the brand has no owned content to counter that narrative.

**The depreciation story — NOT WORKING.**
A 552K-view YouTube video is defining Taycan value perception. Porsche has nothing equivalent on the other side. The CPO program, the 8-year/100K battery warranty — these exist but aren't being deployed narratively.

**Comparison to Tesla — NOT WORKING.**
Every US luxury EV buyer is comparing the Taycan to a Model S, BMW i5, or Lucid Air. Porsche doesn't make this comparison in any owned content. BMW and Mercedes do make comparisons (implicitly or explicitly). Porsche cedes the competitive battlefield entirely.

### Is This a Paid Media, Earned Media, or Owned Content Problem?

**All three — but the root is owned content, and the most urgent is earned media.**

- **Owned content problem:** Porsche.com has a newsroom that reads like press releases. The "stories" section has lifestyle content, but it's not structured around buyer objections. There is no serial content program that builds a relationship with a prospective Taycan buyer through their consideration journey.
- **Earned media problem:** The Taycan's loudest earned media voices in 2024–2025 are negative (depreciation, charging failures). The positive voices (Out of Spec, Car and Driver) are not being amplified. There is no active influencer/creator program doing for the Taycan what Porsche PR once did with long-form films.
- **Paid media problem:** PCNA's paid media spend is under $100M across all vehicles. There is no documented Taycan-specific paid push in 2024–2025 beyond programmatic. The most recent high-profile paid moment was "The Heist" in 2020.

### What CE Could Do That Nobody Is Doing

**1. The Ownership Arc Series**
No brand in the luxury EV space has created a sustained, episodic owned content series that follows real buyers through the first 2 years of Taycan ownership — addressing the real questions (software updates, charging trips, depreciation fears, track experience). This converts the forum anxiety into brand-controlled transparency. It is the Apple "Shot on iPhone" model applied to EV ownership: let the product speak through real people, real moments.

**2. The Supercharger Network Story**
The NACS access story (September 2025) is one of the most material improvements to Taycan's daily ownership proposition. It was announced on porsche.com and disappeared. A proper campaign — "Now Every Supercharger Is a Porsche Charger" or equivalent — directly answers the #1 infrastructure objection and positions the upgrade as a gift to existing owners, a purchase accelerant for prospects.

**3. The Fastest Charger You've Never Heard Of**
The Taycan's 800V / 320 kW charging is genuinely better than anything else at speed in the segment. A direct comparison campaign showing the Taycan getting 150 miles in 15 minutes vs. a Model S or i5 doing the same stop — presented as real-world road trip content, not a lab test — would be distinctive, sharable, and answering the exact question buyers are asking. Out of Spec is doing this. Porsche should own it.

**4. EV of the Year — Campaign, Not Press Release**
Car and Driver's EV of the Year award should be the spine of a 12-month earned/paid/owned campaign in the US. BMW runs Super Bowl ads for a car that won JD Power. Porsche won a bigger prize and sent a press release.

**5. The New Porsche Buyer Story**
50%+ of Taycan buyers are new to Porsche. This is a brand expansion story hiding inside a sales decline story. CE could build a campaign that actively recruits this buyer — by showing people who came from Tesla, who came from BMW — and captures their "first Porsche" moment. This is testimonial-as-culture, not advertising-as-testimonial.

**6. Lifestyle Comms Integration (Abby's Domain)**
The experiential infrastructure is there — Porsche Experience Centers, "Porsche NOW" pop-ups. These are not generating content that gets out of the event and into the buyer's feed. CE's expertise at turning physical brand moments into earned media and ongoing owned content is the exact gap in what PCNA is doing.
